Story Ideas: Turn "I Want a Story" Into a Seed You Can Write
Most people stall at "I want to write a story" because that isn't a story — it's a wish. A wish has no shape. Before you draft, run the Story Seed Gate: give your idea three things — a setting hook, a protagonist with a struggle, and a core conflict. If any one is missing, you don't have a story yet, you have a mood. Stop and fill the gap first.
Story Seed Gate: fill in before drafting
- Setting Hook: one line that makes the world feel specific — a time, a place, or a rule that's slightly off
- Protagonist Struggle: what the main character wants, and what blocks them
- Core Conflict: the force or person pulling against the protagonist
- Exit: all three filled → you have a seed you can draft. Any empty → keep brainstorming, don't write yet.
Example
- Setting Hook: A town where everyone forgets the previous day at midnight.
- Protagonist Struggle: A 14-year-old who stays awake in secret to protect her brother's only memory of their mother.
- Core Conflict: The town council finds out she's awake and orders her silenced.
All three present → a story seed you can actually draft from.
Prewriting checklist
- Setting hook is specific, not generic
- Protagonist has a want and a block
- There's a real opposing force
- No empty slot → otherwise keep building the seed
If your protagonist slot is empty, character ideas with build sheets gives genre-grouped seeds and a five-step sheet to turn each one into a full character.
Once the seed holds together, use the story structure guide to turn it into escalating choices and visible change.
Need another starting point? The story topic generator for a new seed can supply a subject before you run the gate.
When the seed is stable, turn its strongest character, line, place, object, contradiction, or question into a name with these book title ideas and fill-in formulas.
For a setting-first seed, use these fantasy story ideas built from world rules, then bring the result back through the Story Seed Gate.
